When the water rose, the paper records did not.

When floodwater takes a village, it also takes the paperwork. Notebooks, plastic tags, and market receipts do not survive a season of standing water. Animals scatter. Owners spend weeks trying to prove that a recovered animal is theirs — to neighbours, to buyers, and to anyone offering relief.

In August 2025, Animal Passport teams worked on livestock flood rescue: registering and matching animals by muzzle so a farmer could reclaim stock without a paper file. Press across Pakistan covered the work because the problem is not rare. It is what paper identity looks like when the weather turns.

A digital passport does not replace the herd. It replaces the argument. Scan the muzzle, pull the record, and the animal’s identity is still there — even if the tag is gone and the notebook is not.

That is the standard we are building toward: identity that lives with the animal, not in a drawer that can flood.
